Polytenization of the ribosomal genes on the X and Y chromosomes of Drosophila melanogaster.

چکیده

It has previously been shown (Endow and Glover 1979), that polytenization of the ribosomal genes in D. melanogaster Ore-R X/Y cells and in hybrid X/X cells (Endow 1980) involves replication of genes predominantly from one of the cell's two nucleolus organizers. This analysis takes advantage of strain-specific differences in X and Y chromosome rDNA hybridization patterns detected using the Southern blotting technique. In this report, I extend the previous observations by examining polytene rDNA patterns in wild-type and hybrid X/Y cells. A dominance hierarchy for the X and Y chromosomes from three strains of D. melanogaster is presented and possible mechanisms of replicative dominance are discussed.

Independent control of ribosomal gene replication in polytene chromosomes of Drosophila melanogaster.

The saturation values for ribosomal RNA hybridization have been determined for DNA from diploid and polytene tissues of Drosophila melanogaster. These values have been measured in XO and XX larvae which have, respectively, one and two nucleolus organizers in the diploid chromosome set. The results show that (1) in diploid cells the ribosomal (r)DNA is present in amounts proportional to the numb...

Molecular characterization of ribosomal genes on the Ybb- chromosome of Drosophila melanogaster.

The question of whether the Ybb- chromosome contains ribosomal genes has been examined by using Southern blot analysis and comparing rDNA hybridization patterns for X/X and X/Ybb- DNA. The results demonstrate that the Ybb- chromosome contains sequences that hybridize to an rDNA probe under stringent conditions. Differential hybridization of some of these sequences with DNAs corresponding to dif...

The Drosophila salivary gland chromocenter contains highly polytenized subdomains of mitotic heterochromatin.

Peri-centromeric regions of Drosophila melanogaster chromosomes appear heterochromatic in mitotic cells and become greatly underrepresented in giant polytene chromosomes, where they aggregate into a central mass called the chromocenter. We used P elements inserted at sites dispersed throughout much of the mitotic heterochromatin to analyze the fate of 31 individual sites during polytenization. ...

Evolution of ribosomal RNA gene copy number on the sex chromosomes of Drosophila melanogaster.

A diverse array of cellular and evolutionary forces--including unequal crossing-over, magnification, compensation, and natural selection--is at play modulating the number of copies of ribosomal RNA (rRNA) genes on the X and Y chromosomes of Drosophila. Accurate estimates of naturally occurring distributions of copy numbers on both the X and Y chromosomes are needed in order to explore the evolu...

Evolution of the ribosomal DNA spacers of Drosophila melanogaster: different patterns of variation on X and Y chromosomes.

Length variation of the ribosomal gene spacers of Drosophila melanogaster was studied. Analysis of 47 X chromosomal and 47 Y chromosomal linked rDNA arrays collected from five continents indicates that the arrays on the two chromosomes differ qualitatively. The Y-linked arrays from around the world share little or no similarity for either their overall length or the organization of their spacer...
